Tip of the Week

Hitting good fairway woods off the deck

1.) First and most importantly you need to understand that hitting a fairway wood requires a sweeping swing path, approaching the ball from a shallow angle. It is therefore essential that your ball position is correct; it should be just inside your left heel.

2.) Do a few practice swings before hitting, ensuring that you sweep the grass in the place the ball would be – concentrate on trying to keep the club head in contact with the grass for as long a distance as is possible - about 3 to 6 inches. We don’t want a divot or the club head swinging above the grass.

3.) To achieve the above sweeping action, try to keep your swing nice and smooth. Relax your hands and ensure you make a full body rotation on the backswing.

Understand that hitting a fairway wood is a difficult shot for most players and the lie of the ball is crucial to your success. If the ball is lying poorly it is often better to take your medicine and just lay up with an iron.

Happy practicing!

Ryan
