| Tip of the Week Reading greens correctly is challenging on any golf course but particularly so on ours. I see many players plumb-bobbing to help determine or confirm the correct line on which to putt the ball and often wonder about the technique they are using of this often-misunderstood-green-reading method. So this week I have decided to explain it… The Theory Hanging the putter by holding it with 2 fingers below the grip creates a vertical line by which to help gauge the slope of the green. How to do it Stand about 8 – 10 feet directly behind your ball and the hole. Squat onto your haunches and extend the putter out in front of you using only two fingers to grip it just below the grip. Make sure that the toe of the putter is pointed in the direction of the hole otherwise the putter may hang at an angle. |

Looking at the line with your dominant eye, allow the shaft of the putter to pass through the middle of the ball. The hole will now appear on one side of the shaft, this is the side the putt will break from.
The Danger
You have to be very precise in your alignment of this method as being slightly out of place will result in an incorrect reading. Face balanced or toe balanced putters work but the others don’t so check whether yours is balanced!!
Happy practicing!

Ryan
