Tip of the Week
Practice Smart, Not Hard.
All too often I see golfers on the driving range practicing incorrectly. Are you one of those golfers who never practice, but before a big game hits 200 balls the day before? Or perhaps you are someone who spends 90% of their time on the range hitting the driver?

In practice it is important that whatever you do, you do consistently. For instance, it is far better to hit 20 balls a day practicing the correct things than going once a month to the driving range and hitting 200 balls. No amateur golfer can hit 200 balls concentrating on each shot. Your practice should be structured and regular, devoting the correct percentage of time to each aspect of your game. Golf is the one game you can practice and actually get worse at!

Here is what a typical practice session should be:

5 minutes Warm Up and Stretching
5 minutes Pitch shots (>75m)
5 minutes short iron (PW, 9 or 8)
5 minutes mid iron (7, 6 or 5)
3 minutes long iron (3, 4 or hybrids)
3 minutes Woods (driver or 3 wood)
14 minutes chipping (greenside)
10 minute short putts
10 minutes longer putts

Total time: 1 hour

Note the amount of emphasis placed on the short game. You should spend about 60% of your practice time on the short game if you really want to improve those scores. So next time you have got some time to practice, plan properly and practice smart, not hard!!

Ryan
