Downhill lies
As I said last week - the trick to playing from an uphill or downhill lie is swinging with the slope. This week we will have a look at the downhill lie. Setup with the ball more towards the back of your stance, match your shoulder angle to the slope of the ground and place a little more weight on your front leg. Do a few practice swings, trying to follow the slope of the ground before setting up to hit the shot.
Most players push the ball to the right on uphill lies because their lower body movement is accelerated by the slope. As a result, the lower body gets ahead of the upper body causing the swing path to move to the outside on the follow through, resulting in a shot that starts right of your intended target. To compensate for this, set up with your feet to the left of your intended target line.
Because the ball launches from a lower angle on a downhill lie, it will go much further than usual. Ton compensate for this, take a one less club than normal and allow for the ball to run a little further when it hits the green or fairway.
Look forward to seeing you all at the Links soon!!
