Bi-annual green keepers’ conference - Feedback
Last week I was very fortunate to be invited to the bi-annual green keepers’ conference at Leopard Creek in Malelane. Here I experienced very interesting lectures from some of the industries leading agronomists and turf pathologists from the States and the UK.
Conferences like these are always great, as we get an opportunity to share information with other superintendents from all around the country. It is unbelievable to see and hear how much more specialised the golf course maintenance industry is in overseas countries. In South Africa we do not have the opportunity to further our studies or to attend any more courses. The only way to further knowledge is to do it through the internet on a part time basis by doing assignments. This has, however, not put South African courses back at all when one looks at the condition and the levels of maintenance that is being performed.
We do have some of the greatest courses in the world, but by not having enough exposure worldwide, through television for example, people do not know that. All in all it was a great experience and I got a lot of new information that I will be utilising on the golf course.
Our golf course is holding up nicely now that the temperatures have dropped. We will be concentrating on manicuring and all the ‘attention to detail’ aspects on the course to make your golfing experience one of the best in the country.
