Tining the Greens The Advantages and Disadvantages

We usually do an annual tining of the greens heading into spring season. This is when the turf's growing season starts again after winter. The recovery period is also limited to ensure normal playing conditions as soon as possible. I could go on and write a whole book about this, but instead I am only going to list a couple of advantages and disadvantages of the process.

Advantages:
1. Release of toxic gasses from the soil.
2. Improved wetting of hydrophobic areas.
3. Accelerated drying of wet areas.
4. Increased infiltration capacity, especially where surface compaction or thatch limits infiltration.
5. Stimulated root growth within the holes.
6. Increased shoot growth atop the holes.
7. Disruption of soil layers resulting from topdressing.
8. Control of thatch.
9. Improved Turf grass response to thatch.
Disadvantages:
1. Temporary disruption of the turf surface.
2. Increased weed development in the weaker areas of the surface.
3. Increased potential for Turf grass desiccation as subsurface tissues as they are exposed.
4. Increased susceptibility to cut worms and black maize beetle infestation.

This is a very short description of the pros and cons of the process. If you do have any questions, please feel free to contact me. Note that this process can also be done on home lawns to improve the quality. Please look at the images to show you what it looks like from up close and what the machine and the different tines looks like.

All the best,
Andre Gerber
