What is Topdressing?

I would like to carry on with my explanations about certain supplementary cultural practices. This week I am elaborating a bit more on topdressing and seeing that we are heading into the perfect weather conditions to do it, I am sure that some of you might find it interesting.

What is Topdressing?
Topdressing is the practice by which a thin layer of sand or soil is applied to an established turf or an established Turf grass planting. When used in conjunction with turf grass establishment, its purposes are to partially cover and stabilise the planting material and to retard desiccation. On established turfs, topdressing is performed for several purposes namely:

1. Controlling of thatch build-up.
2. Smoothing a playing surface.
3. Promoting recovery from injury or disease.
4. Protecting greens in winter.
5. Changing the characteristics of the turf grass growth medium.

A big plus point for light and regular sand applications on our greens is the fact that it keeps the greens uniform in playing conditions and soil layering. The same practice must be applied to bowling greens. Moderate surface irregularities that result from traffic, climate conditions, turf grass growth and other causes can be smoothed out by regular and sufficient topdressing. One of the biggest advantages is that it also maintains green speed, without putting the turf under unnecessary stress by cutting it shorter or more frequently.

Hope you have a great week ahead and remember to keep your head down and follow through.

All the best,
Andre Gerber
