Temperatures are climbing

It is that time of year again when all the lovely flowers are out and the temperatures are getting a bit higher. Spring is in the air and soon summer will be upon us.

The golf course is in good nick and loves the improved weather conditions. We have lowered our height of cut on the greens, tees, green surrounds and fairways. I usually do it this time of the year as it is not yet too hot for the grass to stress out. Later in the season I will raise the cutting heights again when temperatures get higher.

We are very fortunate to have a team here at The Links that knows exactly what is expected of them. I have been here now for almost 4 years and have seen a couple of people come and go. On the estate maintenance side of things we have reached a stage where I am confident that we have the right people in place. Each of them have been trained and cross trained to cover all aspects of the estate. Below is a very short summary of my management staff and their responsibilities on the estate;

1. Thinus Le Roux – Thinus has been with me for the past 8-9 years and he is recognised as the best workshop manager in the country. Due to him, our equipment is in great condition and through proper maintenance procedures he has extended the life of our equipment and this alone is a huge cost saving in this economical climate. He is also the repairs and maintenance guy for the club house and I do not even want to go into all the little things he has built at almost no cost around the estate – wedding gazebo, room dividers in the conference room, etc.

2. Kevern Burger – Kevern has been with us now for just over 2 years and has really grown in his own way on the estate. He is a very keen young man who is not afraid to get involved in anything that is put before him. Right now he has moved off the golf course side of the operation and taken on the role of water reticulation manager. That includes everything that has got anything to do with water on the estate. He also shares the responsibility, with Rinus for the electricity on the estate.

3. Jarryd Petersen – Jarryd has been with us for just over three years now and just recently has been promoted to 1st Assistant Golf Course Superintendent. He is responsible for the entire golf course supervision and running of the daily programs set out by myself. He will also focus on the back nine as Kevern has moved over to his new role.

4. Rinus Peltenburg – Rinus is our security manager for the estate. He is working very closely with the Smhart management on site to ensure that security is managed correctly. This is his main responsibility. He is also the estate maintenance team manager and sees to all the mowing, alien eradication and perimeter fence. A new addition on to his role is being in charge of all the sewerage of the estate.

5. Danisile Mhlabeni – Danny has been with me for the past 7-8 years and has come through all the ranks to now be appointed as the new 2nd Assistant Golf Course Assistant. He has been at the Links for the past 3 years and is just one of those guys who grabs any opportunity that comes his way. He will be responsible for the staff on the front nine and also all the programs set before him.

As you all can see, it is not a very big maintenance team that oversees everything on the estate, but we get around everything we do on the estate and the golf course. From all the services aspects to all water, electricity and sewerage to the whole golf course and the Sand River trail.

Well done to all my guys and I know that you are all part of the great team that we have out there.

All the best,
Andre Gerber
