Things are hotting up!

It is the time of year when everybody is phoning and trying to book a round of golf at the Links. This is always great because we get busier and all the familiar faces return to us.

It is also the time of the year when the golf course takes the most strain due to heavy traffic and foot flow. Our greens usually take the most strain as each and every person that plays ends up around the pin and cup – or at least in most cases. You can all assist us by doing this by one small thing – repairing divots and pitchmarks.

Most of the time it is such a great feeling for me to repair a pitchmark, as I do not hit a hell of a lot of greens in the first place. Always work the pitchmark from the outside inwards. People think that you must push the fork in and lift it up. This creates a little bare spot on the green. The idea is to close the little hole so that you do not notice the sand underneath.

Another issue is the repairing of divots. In our case at the Links it is always recommended to replace the divot rather than use sand. Unlike most of the courses in the country – we have rye grass. This is not a creeping grass and throwing sand in the divot will not allow the grass to cover over the bare area.

On kikuyu and kweek courses this is the correct thing to do though. Below you can see a couple of examples on repairing divots and pitchmarks.
