What can I spray on my lawn to remove weeds

I have had a couple of homeowners and people in town contacting me recently with the same questions – what can I spray on my lawn to remove weeds, what can I spray to remove kikuyu out of my lawn without killing everything and what fertilizer should I use.

It is the time of year when all warm season type grass goes dormant – meaning that the growth pattern takes a big downturn as temperatures drop. Weeds on the other hand grow at the same rate throughout the year, thus the more prominent visual during winter.

Clover

Chickweed

Horseweed

These are just a couple of most common weeds found in our area that proves to be taking over lawns in winter months. The question is – how do I get rid of it without killing my lawn? You need to choose between a selective- and non-selective herbicide.
The one will selectively kill off the undesired weed while the other one will kill everything. Below is an explanation on how to choose between the two;

1. Selective herbicides are weed killers which control undesired plants without damaging desired plants; for example, controlling broad-leaved weeds in turf.
2. Total weed control products are non-selective herbicides for use in situations where all vegetation is to be eliminated, typically in amenity and industrial areas.

Always look at the active ingredient on the bottle. A product like Round Up will kill everything it is sprayed on. This is a non selective herbicide. (Glyphosate) beware of this product as it will eradicate everything it is used on.

Rather ask for a product with a selective active ingredient when it comes to spraying out weeds in your lawn. Below are a couple of products that I have always used on various grass types with great success;

1. Turfweeder - Dicamba (benzoic acid)
2. Basagran – Bentazon

Next week I will cover a bit more on how to eradicate kikuyu out of Bermuda lawns.
Please contact me should you need any additional information and/or advice.

All the best,
