Eradication of kikuyu.

Last week I covered the topic of selectively killing weeds from your lawn. This week I would like to touch on the eradication of kikuyu.

Once again there are two ways of killing off kikuyu namely selectively and non-selectively.

Non-selectively – this is done by spraying any product with glyphosate as active ingredient. There are plenty of products like this in the shops namely Roundup, Ridder, Pond Master, Rodeo just to name a few. Spraying any product with glyphosate in will kill everything it touches so please be careful where you spray it.

Selectively – I have tried to find some more information on the internet regarding how you can take kikuyu out of kweek lawns, but there is not a lot of information on this strategy. I use a product called Focus Ultra on the golf course that is very effective when applied to cynodon areas when the kikuyu is busy creeping in. Focus Ultra (cycloxydim) is sprayed at 5 lit per ha and is a post emergent herbicide. It is safe to use on any indigenous vegetation, but will eradicate only the kikuyu.

Please contact me should you need any help and/or advice to apply this herbicide. Too much of it will kill off everything and too little will not work and you will be wasting you time and money.

Another area of concern is usually your driveways and flower beds. I believe in the safer pre-emergent herbicides that are available.

On driveways you can use a product called Outpace Super. It is a mixture of glyphosate, simazine and terbuthylazine for vegetation control in non-crop areas. It serves as a pre-emergent herbicide that will keep your driveway free of weeds for up to 3 months.

Flower beds also gets full of weeds especially during winter. A good pre-emergent product to use is a granular herbicide called Snapshot. Remove all weeds from the flower beds and sprinkle some of this on top of the soil. This will ensure that you have weed free flower beds for up to 3 months.

Most of these products can be bought at the Humansdorp Ko-Op. please feel free to contact me should you need any additional information.

All the best,
Andre Gerber
