Why are the big Candelabra Lilies so special?

Big Candelabra Lilies or Groot Wieliewalies (Brunsvigia litoralis) only occur naturally between Tsitsikamma and P.E. and nowhere else on earth.

They are threatened by coastal developments and are listed as endangered in the new Red Listing.

In St Francis Bay Greater Double Collared Sunbirds pollinate these flowers although sometimes they rob them of their nectar. They do this by making a tiny hole at the base of each flower instead of putting their long curved beaks into the flower and in this way getting pollen on their faces to take to the next flower.

Keep an eye out to see if our Sunbirds are robbers or doing their job properly.
