It's all about timing

Last weekend, we had a large Nomads group representing three provinces, Free State, Easterns (Eastern Gauteng) and Eastern Cape and a wedding - at the same time. We also had a smaller VIP golfing group and the normal Saturday morning members.

No Problem! The wedding was to begin on the east lawn at 15h30. The members will be in the bar after golf – their space. The golfing group will also be in the bar as they were only 10. I put a table together for them and did scoreboards in advance and got them up on the window before they finished. Seeing that it was their first time here and seeing that the course sort of got the better of them (equally), I adjusted their scores slightly UP – that made them happy, as others could see the scoreboard. The Nomads, well if you know the Nomads, can be a very attractive after golf group to have. They are sponsored by Bell’s famous Old Scotch Whisky and SAB; as good Nomads, they generally support their sponsors quite well. So, I set the Nomads up on the Veranda outside the Halfway House – all 60 of them. With their first tee times at 8am and their last tee times at 9h40, that should put them all in and showered by about 15h30. The original booking for the Nomads was for about 30 players; leave it to St Francis Links to draw a group double the size we originally booked for.

Again… No problem. But, with the bride going up the stairs at 15h30, probably closer to 15h45, maybe it would be a good idea to delay the Nomads Prizegiving until after the ceremony – just in case the announcement of the various winners result in massive cheers and applause. We set up a separate PA system for the Nomads. With the easterly wind, sound should not carry. Still, the decision to wait proved to be a good one. I informed the Nomads at 15h25 that the bridal party was about to go up. They showed great reserve and respect… Really! Then, after the ceremony they showed their respect again by quietly watching in their jackets and ties as the entire wedding party came down to the lower lawn for a group picture. Liezl, above, counted to three and the wedding party erupted in cheers for the newly married couple. After the third count to three and the third arm-waving shot, I counted to three for my Nomads and they all let out a big cheer for the new couple as well. Perfect timing!

Then, as the couple went off for pictures and the wedding party knocked back some celebratory drinks upstairs, we proceeded with Prizegiving without missing a beat. The short delay for the bride and groom was completely unnoticed by the Nomads as Arthur Bell and Charles Glass filled the gap quite nicely. The members in the bar, the group in the bar, the Nomads on the Veranda, the wedding party on the lawn and, by the time the bride and groom returned, the remaining Nomads had solved the world’s problems, the Stormers were up on the Cheetahs and the Cunningham’s were ready for the evening braai at Brisan on the Canals.

I love it when a plan comes together!
