Thanks MOM(s)! Happy Mother’s Day!!!

Cheers to the ladies who made us what we are, the one’s who fixed it when it went wrong, forgave us when we goofed, hugged us when we did well, made us eat the broccoli, "convinced" DAD when we needed her help and when it all seemed “too much” – Mom-in-Law said, “Aagh, this too shall pass!” … And it did!

Thanks MOMS! By the way, we are serving the perfect Mother’s Day Lunch… Bring yours to St Francis LINKS!

You and your perfect weather… HA!

I have just come from the perfect climate known as the Highveld…duh!

I can’t get you (and me) out of there quick enough… The rain, the rain, the lightening, the thunder, the rain… Has it been raining forever or what?

For the past two weeks here, there have been evening showers – enough to turn the place green again… No wind… Blue skies and perfect temperatures. Where the heck are you, Joburgers and Pretorians! You should be here, or at least making a plan. The traffic is worse than ever. The English, the Germans, the French (thanks to the Irish) are coming. Get out while you still can. The ARK will be finished by the weekend and no one is counting by two’s.

After my friend Dave Usendorff’s wedding on Friday, where Liezl and I stayed in a guest house 5 minutes away – a nice place near Silver Lakes called Sherwood Lodge, we moved slowly south to JHB. I was supposed to drive to Rosebank and back to Pretoria on Friday for a midday eye appointment. Thankfully, we were clever and moved the appointment to Monday morning when we would be 70km’s and 5 hours (round trip) closer. So on Saturday, with no commuter traffic, we made the great trek to the city from the other city in an amazing ONE Hour despite the rain, two stalled cars and the road works. I carefully planned the next day to include movies and a show, GREASE -Little or no driving would be involved. That’s good because it never stopped raining. With my appointment in Rosebank now rescheduled for Monday at 7h30, we enquired as to what the appropriate time of departure should be. More than one clever person insisted that we should leave at 5h30 – two hours to travel 10 km’s on wide roads – that’s like going to Humansdorp on foot. With respect, we went online to make sure that the William Nichol turnoff could not be missed, as the fear of re-entering morning traffic after a navigational mistake could be fatal – worse yet, I could miss my appointment with Dr. Levine, the known specialist that I needed to see (to see). So, at 4h30 we were up… At 5h20 we were on the road and at 6h03 (in the rain) we were in front of the offices after not one, but two navigational errors and one re-direction from a very helpful petrol attendant who reminded us that Rosebank was still on the other side of Hyde Park. That was really about 20 minutes on the road!

Moral to the Story: If you cannot live here in ‘paradise by the sea’ and commute to the city, then go to work at 5am. In case you didn’t know, there is NO TRAFFIC anywhere at 5am in the city or anywhere else. Go early and stay late… That might work!

And remember, when you get here, please look both ways before you roll the stop signs. While no locals actually stop, we do check both ways before rolling on!
