Helen’s Ace is the Difference!

Helen Bridges captured her third victory in a row by closing out her nearest rival, Linda Muller, on the 18th hole. Helen’s narrow victory was propelled by and amazing Ace (Hole-In-One – her first) on the fourth hole – top green! When the ball was found in the bottom of the cup, the cheer could be heard many fairways away – those in earshot new immediately what had happened.

After 18 holes, Helen and Linda were tied. With the aid of the hole-in-one, Helen stated the final day’s play with an outstanding 40! Linda was close behind, covering the front nine in 42. She squared the game on the 10th and then relinquished the lead on the 11th – a lead that would remain. Both ladies played the last two holes nervously; with friends gathered around the last, Helen two-putted for the title. Cindy Mills played steady golf and finished strong to take the Overall Nett prize.

Fog played a part in the outcome of the tournament as some competitors coped better than others with the tough conditions. Play had to finally be stopped on Saturday as the combination of fog and lack of daylight made the going impossible. Those left on the course returned early Sunday to warm, northerly winds and no further interruptions from Mother Nature. First round leader, Vlam Michau, who played all the way through the difficult conditions, posting a fine 37-37=74 gross, was caught on the back nine by former Champion, Phillip Smith. Following his Saturday 77, the game got sharper with a front nine, 38 and eight holes of under par golf on the final nine. Then, a near disaster almost prevented what looked like the inevitable. The long-hitting Smith attempted to carry the dam on the 18th. The “Northerly” caught his high flying drive and moved it left and into the grass above the hazard. Unbeknown to him, outstanding junior golfer, Theo van Wyk, his closest pursuer was busy making five on the par-3 17th while Vlam fell victim to his third bogey in a row. After a great debate about his options, it was determined that the drop circle at the end of the dam was his only acceptable option. For the first time, nerves played their part with him as well. After another ball in the water, a long approach and three putts, his head dropped with his putt holed for 8! Little did he know that his 77-77 (with an 8 on the last) would stand. The Golf Gods were not playing in the same fourball with Theo and Vlam as they both found the greenside bunker left.

While their title hopes were slipping away, Former Champion and provincial golfer, Anton Prisloo, was flying through the field with a final 18 of 73, with 35 on the final nine. He finished 2nd Gross and Colville Pieterse won the Overall Nett with a one-over par 145. He bumped Peter McHugh by a single shot. Bryan Neary had two days of solid play in winning the Stableford Division with scores of 35 and 32.
