On the lighter side – nice finishes.

Last week in golf around the world, the following took place:

Sandra Marais defeats Club Champ, Helen Bridges, in 19 holes! The ladies have completed their 1st annual knock-out tournament at St Francis Links. When they completed 18 holes, the match was square.

Off they went to the 1st again and minutes later, Sandra was being congratulated by Helen. Well done ladies for making the final. Well done Sandra for your victory!
Runner-up, Helen (l) and Knock-out champion, Sandra
• SFL member, Sandra Cunningham, represented our club and the region at the Sanlam Cancer Challenge finals at Sun City. She played both courses and did us proud. Sandra finished fourth overall on the long and difficult courses. She made five 3-pointers and two 4-pointers on her final round… Just goes to show you that it’s a game for a lifetime (Sandra recently turned 70 years young!)

• Speaking of ageless – young Freddie Couples blew away the field on the Champions Tour winning in his own backyard, Houston. He shot 29 on the back nine, carded 63 for the day and left the field behind.
Going the other way – youth prevails!
Lee-Anne Pace is on a mission as she climbed to the top of the Ladies’ European Tour Order of Merit by winning the Sanya Ladies’ Open in China. This was her 4th victory on tour this year. Note: Lee-Anne plays out of Mossel Bay Golf Club – the same club that is the home club as Louis Oosthuizen, the Open Champion! I have learned that they are selling bottled water that is claimed to contain magical ingredients. I have ordered a case and it will be available here at the Club.

• Matteo Menassaro, at 17 years and 188 days, became the youngest winner in European Tour history, beating the previous record set by New Zealand's Danny Lee, who was 18 years and 213 days old when he won the 2008 Johnnie Walker Classic.
About a century ago, Dale Hayes, became the youngest to win on the European Tour when he was 18.

I listened as one of the announcers said on Sunday that it shouldn’t count, as the European Tour had not even been officially launched – bull dust. That holds about as much weight as telling me a hole-in-one is only an ace if it only happens in an official 18-hole round of golf witnessed by 3 competent and reliable witnesses. Pards, if I get on a cart and go out for a sundowner, stand on the 4th tee with only the Golf Gods as my witness and it goes in – it’s in, baby!

Well done, Dale, for holding the record for decades and well done to all of the golfing stars this week – headlined by the Sandra's, of course!
But… These are not the greatest golfing stories of the week… On Sunday, as darkness was closing in, Jonathan Byrd stood on the 17th tee (the 4th extra hole of the Shriner’s in Las Vegas) and proceeded to knock his 6-iron into the hole!!!

Minutes before, he made an amazing up-and-down on the 18th to stay in a playoff with defending champion, Martin Lard, and Cameron Percy. Standing on the 18th green, they agreed to play one more hole. After Jonathan’s ace, they both hit it in the water – no surprise. The top-125 players on the tour retain their tour cards; JB was lying 117th going into this event – that little 6-iron just gave him two more years without additional stress.
