| ‘Dear Jeff This morning at 06:00 my friends and I departed from home in Despatch with great anticipation (and some trepidation!!) to play golf at the St Francis Links in the monthly Uitenhage Police Golf day… and what a wonderful experience it turned out to be! Before I continue I want to give you an indication of what we as Police Officers are used to when golf days like this are arranged. Clubs generally will grant us a concession on their rates (however reluctantly) but upon arrival we get the "watch your step!" treatment. As a rule we do not leave after a round with that warm fuzzy feeling to return to savour the hospitality of the club staff because we are generally treated as sub-humans. |
Destination second to none!
|
Today, however, we were treated like royalty from the moment we opened our car doors in the car park at 07:15. Unfortunately I did not catch the name of the attendant who collected our bags at our car, but the manner in which he addressed us was exceptional - a tribute to him and your hospitality training. The gentlemen's locker room is second to none and to have a lockable locker assigned to each of us, AS VISITORS no less, was something special.
On the first tee we were met by Ryan who directed us to the correct tee box. He addressed us in a humble, patient manner and gave us a few pointers that assisted us with navigating the rest of the course. The GPS-equipped carts were great and the course is a gem. I was so enthralled with the course, its condition and layout, that I haven't yet started to worry about all the balls I lost!
We really felt like royalty today, from the moment we stopped in the car park, through the locker room, Pro Shop, halfway house and in Jack's Bar. We are used to serve (serve and protect, you know) not really to BE served and especially not in the manner that we experienced today. When you "admonished" us when we “approached” the bar (to serve ourselves) and then sent a waiter to serve US, it was the candle on the cake for the day and allowed us, for once, to sit and enjoy the view and reflect on the round.
Today golf took a back seat to the experience of St Francis Links, all thanks to the wonderful treatment dished out by you and your staff.
Please convey our sincerest gratitude to your staff for a beautiful lasting memory. We agree that, when possible, we will definitely return (after we dropped our handicaps a bit!) and we will sing your praises to all.
Kindest regards,
Schan Bezuidenhout
…I have been known to “tear up” easily! Thanks, Schan. You are most welcome to come back! Our team will be waiting…
