2010 has been a difficult year for most businesses, most people involved in tourism (despite the world focus on the World Cup) and certainly for most golf estates and resorts. Unless a larger portion of the estate is occupied by “first homers”, most estates have suffered. Having said that, then why are WE improving in all ways…
2010 at St Francis Links was also a challenging year in many ways. However, at year end 30 September, we finished with our best results ever. Top 10 ranking (Golf Digest), Best Club Reception in South Africa (Bride’s Choice Awards) and still the best investment and destination in South Africa. For our members who purchased property before the estate was completed, who could’ve told you that this development, in year four, could and would achieve these accolades AND financial profitability! Yep, for those who invested to re-sell, the timing has been tough. But for those who invested in the future, yours couldn’t be brighter… I mean it. Ask the homeowners who are here.
Why is it working – very good course, very good clubhouse, very good estate – great staff! This week, we teamed up with Christy’s Catch to give the team a Christmas Party in November (as you know, we’ll be a little busy looking after you and others in the holiday season). All staff members, from bartenders to chain saw operators, enjoyed the day together, with music provided by our friend Keith Donaldson, food and drink by CC and good team spirit came for free.
A patron at the restaurant asked me why I was throwing a party for our staff when they were striking, picketing and disrupting business in August. Well, I said, while that was unpleasant, it was their right. During the strike we, as management, worked together to keep everything on track; we also learned a few good things about our operation by doing their jobs ourselves. Our team, over the past four years, has changed – there are fewer good people doing more things with better results. Our merging of operational duties has had a direct and positive effect on the bottom line – the Team at St Francis Links have never compromised our high standards and despite the sluggish economy, the strike and many procedural changes. Our TEAM deserved a party and a time to reflect. I have always believed (like Mary Poppins) that a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down. We run a tight ship, we expect consistent, hard work and we succeed in a region of the country that is not known for high standards or consistent anything… Well, done TEAM – you deserved your party.
