...think I can, I think I can!
| Every year most of us make new plans, set new goals and commit to a better life through exercise, education and motivation. When it comes to motivation – I have always been a cheerleader for all around me. When it comes to setting goals and achieving them, I have been pretty good there too… In 2011, I have personal goals and business goals AND mechanisms in place to ensure what I CAN achieve. Some goals rely on others to play their part – that’s where the cheerleading comes in. But if I can relate golf and life for a minute (as I have been known to do through the years), my theme in the past has always centered on focus and attitude – “Every great shot in golf (and Life) starts with a smile. Play one great shot at a time.” |

My theme for this year is all about Commitment and trust. Ben Hogan, who was one of the most methodical players on tour, stated that in his best year (1953), he played three great tournaments; in those tournaments, he played three great rounds and in those rounds, he hit three great shots! Think about it – he won The Masters, The US Open and the Open Championship, claiming the Triple Crown of Golf. The PGA Championship was staged at the same time as the Open Championship preventing him from competing in it – if it hadn’t been for conflicting schedules, maybe he would have won the grand slam in the same year. Nine great shots – three major championships! While Hogan was one of the greatest strikers of the ball, he was also won of the hardest practicers.

When you prepare to play a golf shot, you must first learn to visualise the shot – see the ball flying in the air, visualise where it lands and see it rolling to a stop – preferably in the hole. When you have learned how to visualise the shot, you can then learn how to commit to the shot you want to play. I know, I know…you are now thinking – “hey, I just want to hit the ball!” Bull… give yourself a break and start focusing on the positives. AND, the positives don’t include the statement, “I hope I don’t…” Golf and Life are all about being prepared – prepared for a golf shot and prepared for any challenge. Once you have prepared yourself, you must now commit to the shot – you must trust your swing (and yourself). If Mr. Hogan speaks the truth, success in golf comes from only a few great shots; the rest are good misses. We go through life striving for success, avoiding failure (or at least learning from failure) and managing both. In golf, the hardest thing to do on the course is to stay focused and committed. The golf swing takes only seconds – the walk or ride lasts a few hours.
My 2011 Signature line sums it all up…
You have choices in golf (and in life): Commit to the shot and trust your swing...
You'll perform your best game when you believe in what you're doing...trust and commit - and keep a SMILE on your DIAL!

In the picture above, Dr. Danie Cronje approaches his “near ACE” at the 14th. Speaking of commitment, he averaged a round a day for more than a month while holidaying here. He claims the family has the cart out and ready for him each day – THEY need their 5 hours without him! He simply HAD to play! We thank you, Danie, for all of the friends and family you brought with you.
It may be the right time…
