Charl! Charl! Charl!

Charl! Charl!! Charl!!!

I can read the American papers, the Ozzie papers and probably most papers as they ask, “What do they feed those South Africans?” or “Who’s Next?” But they won’t be saying Charl who???

He made a name for himself last year when he battled Ernie in Florida.

South African golfers…how do they do it???

Birdie at 15; Birdie at 16; Birdie at 17 and Birdie at 18! …Ice for blood!

Perfect FIT!

Who wasn’t struggling to get to sleep after that finish at the 75th Masters on Sunday night? Maybe it was the 7-iron chip in at the first that got him going; maybe it was the eagle-2 at the 3rd that made him believe; maybe it was the consistent shot-making and solid putting that kept him in it until Sir Nick Faldo commented before his second shot at 15 – something like ‘the next four holes may determine who has it to be champion’.

Charl Schwartzel showed the golfing world what “trust” and “commitment” really meant as he played the last four holes at Augusta in record form. While Tiger was charging and the entire Ozzie nation was feeling their first Master’s championship from Geoff Ogilvy OR Adam Scott OR Jason (all) Day, Charl stayed patient and focused.

The producer for CBS should be commended as the golf was coming from all directions at one time. Every time they showed a great shot or putt, you could hear a roar coming from somewhere else. It was amazing!!! Amazing – maybe one of the best Masters EVER!

…well, except for 54-hole leader and amazing 21-year-old, Rory McIlroy…who drove it off the planet on the 10th. He was trying to get to Butler Cabin (where they present the Green Jacket) about two hours early! We’re not worried about you, Pards! The roars will be yours again!

Our first MAJOR…requires a playoff!

Our first qualifying the yearend “Champion of Champions” – the annual interclub between the Nicklaus Signature courses in South Africa – has ended in a tie! James Bredenkamp and Eric Langlands will have to go 18 holes more to see who will be our first of four qualifiers from SFL to represent us at Pearl Valley.

Both members put forth a great total of 36 points to nudge out Dave Hart who turned in 21! Dave felt the (Rory) pressure as he only needed a point on one of the last two holes to tie. Don’t worry, Dave… there are three more chances ahead. I was very disappointed in the sign-up and turnout for the event as many members gave the R100 entry fee a miss – it’s a small price to pay for a chance to play Pearl Valley for three days, with transportation, accommodation, meals and tournament gear included…shame! You can win if you don’t enter!

Our next event will run concurrently with the US OPEN in June. Maybe your confidence levels will be higher after watching Charl’s mammoth performance this past weekend!

Cross-Country Draws a great field – SFB GC put on a Great Show!

Last week, nearly 60 members from the Links and St Francis Bay GC joined for a great game of golf with 9 holes played on each course! Roland Peacock and Justin Roux led the way for the Links, winning the event with 45 points! SFL Captain, Charlie Byl and Don Spies were counted-in tow second with 43 points. Gary O’Shea and Colin Clare were counted-out to 3rd on 43 with the inseparable Rowan Nichol and the ageless, “Wiggie”, Ken Wiggins next on 42. Stormin’ Norman Pretorius and MJ DeBruyn took the last of the great prizes, sponsored by Heather Rabie (pictured with Justin and Charlie).

Harrie, once again, was the halfway house host at Thatchwood’s, serving sandwiches and drinks provided by SUPER SPAR! Heather and her team at SFB GC braaied some great steak rolls for the players after the game. A good time was had by all! Join us, all of you, for the next Cross-Country event in the next quarter of the year!

See you this weekend as we kick-off the Big SIX Challenge!
