NOMADS MAKE A TRIP TO THE LINKS…

Nomads make a trip to the Links… raising money for charity, sharing some laughs…and playing our great course.

For more than 50 years, businessmen from every province in South Africa (and more recently in Zim, OZ and NZ) have gathered on a monthly basis for game of golf, a day of good fun and camaraderie and as a bonus, to raise funds for charity. Over those same fifty years, Nomads have met on an annual basis for a national tournament – with a limited number of golfers eligible from each province. That participation is base on attendance of the monthly games. In some provinces, there is a waiting list just to make the National squad. Every Nomad is nominated before being considered for membership. Somehow, I survived that process and have been a Nomad for nearly as long as I have been in SA. Year’s ago, at Fancourt, I used the Nomads and their great causes to open the door for ‘non-residents’ to play in our first Charity Day. The Nomads Day was a huge success and for many years, Fancourt was considered the anchor for fundraising for Southern Cape Nomads. You see, it’s not just about camaraderie and golf with friends – Nomads has raised millions for local charities!

If you watch a professional tournament in South Africa, chances are good that the Nomads (Golforama) are the ones responsible for putting up all of the scores you see on the course. These volunteers have been doing their thing all over the country since 1962! Hundreds and hundreds and man hours have been put in to provide what you see everywhere from the Nedbank Challenge to the SA Open and all stop in between. SA Breweries, Bell’s and others have been long-time sponsors of Nomads and all they do. Regionally, many other small and large businesses contribute to the success of the Club.

Behind the scenes, ladies, usually wives or girlfriends, assist with the monthly games – check-in, scoring and whatever else is needed.

One thing that is a must before the game…a wee dram of Bell’s and a small glass of milk just to loosen the joints! On the course, Nomads follow a strict dress code (and are usually fined for a wrong cap or socks)! After the game, Nomads don their blazers and ties, ties that represent their years of service, and enjoy Prizegiving – complete with a fines session, prizes and pictures with their rewards.

Nomads are a proud group, a worthy group and a welcome group at St Francis Links. We look forward to having you back – and we look forward to helping wherever and whenever we can to assist with your fundraising! This month, Martin King, our two-time Club Champion was inducted as a member of Nomads – Eastern Cape! Well done, Pards!

Ps…Winning a Nomads Monthly Game is pretty cool, too!
